Tile is low maintenance. Unlike many other surfaces, tile does not burn, fade, absorb odors,and is highly resistant to stain. Periodic damp mopping or sponging with a neutral pH based cleaner is all that is necessary with most tiles. If scrubbing is required to remove stubborn water spots or soap scum, use a nylon pad or soft bristle brush. Stay away from steel wool.

Tile Ratings

Tile is rated by the manufacturer according to its resistance to wear. The wear rating is categorized by a P.E.I number.

P.E.I 1- light traffic- residential bathrooms.

P.E.I 2- medium traffic- residential interiors. Not recommended for entryways, kitchens, stairs.

P.E.I 3- medium heavy traffic- all residential interiors.

P.E.I 4- heavy traffic- suitable for all residential and most commercial applications.

P.E.I 5- heavy plus traffic- all residential and commercial applications where heavy duty wear ability is needed.

Slip Resistance

When selecting a tile, one should always consider the slip resistance characteristics. The higher the probability your floor will be exposed to water or household spills, the higher your need is for a slip resistant tile. Homes with small children need to consider tiles with slip resistant characteristics.
